Shoreline erosion has long been an issue at Amity Point, with survey mapping records showing the foreshore steadily retreating since 1886. Significant areas of public and private land has been lost to the ocean over this time, including the tavern, the pilot station and south passage bar, the racecourse and the old school (pictured).

Erosion at Amity Point is associated with the eastward migration of Rainbow Channel and attempts have been made over the years to slow erosion, including a scuttled ship, car bodies and rocks. Coastal adaptation planning is an ongoing project for Council and residents are encouraged to have their say.
