Residents are encouraged to be part of the next two phases of Redland City Council’s Disaster Management Plan with engagement sessions beginning next week.
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the next two phases of the plan would be specifically aimed at mainland communities.
“The genesis of Redland City’s four-part Disaster Management Plan is in the understanding that the Redlands is a “community of communities” from islands to mainland suburbs, each with its own particular needs in a disaster,” she said.

“The first two phases provide the legislative and island specific strategies for managing a disaster and have received fantastic feedback from the community.
“The final two strategies will provide a plan for mainland and hinterland communities, which provide their own unique opportunities and challenges in preparing for a disaster.
“Local knowledge is invaluable in providing on the ground experience and knowledge to help plan for disasters.
“The information we are looking to gather during these engagement sessions includes how residents can be prepared for disasters, how emergency services respond and how to recover from a disaster.”
The first engagement session will be at Mt Cotton, and Divisional Councillor Julie Talty encouraged residents to get involved with the suburb considered a highly vulnerable location in terms of bushfires.
“The hinterland geography of Mt Cotton means there is a certain vulnerability to bushfires so I think it is important as many residents come to next week’s engagement session as possible,” she said.
“We need to be prepared as a community and not just within individual suburbs but across the whole city.”
