Rehabilitation work has commenced for the repair of the embankment slippage on the eastern side of the Wellington Point Reserve escarpment.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the works would involve the installation of an anchor and mesh system to stabilise the embankment.

“Slope stabilisation is technically challenging work that requires specialist consultants and contractors,” Cr Williams said.

“The anchor and mesh system that is being used will not only help to reduce erosion, but will also promote vegetation growth within the slope.

“Council appreciates the community’s patience while work was undertaken to identify recommendations and cost-effective solutions to repair the slippage.”

The embankment slipped during severe weather events in February 2022 and caused the closure of the foreshore track between Main Road and the eastern side of Wellington Point Recreation Reserve.

The track will remain closed and will be repaired following completion of the embankment stabilisation works.

Division 1 Councillor Wendy Boglary said she welcomed the start of repair works, which were expected to be completed by 1 December 2023, weather permitting.

“I am relieved that work is now starting to repair the large land slip that occurred on the eastern side of the Wellington Point Reserve escarpment about 18 months ago,” Cr Boglary said.

“I know the community will welcome this news and I thank everyone for their patience.”

Traffic control measures will be implemented along Esplanade, and fencing and signage will remain on site until the works are complete.
