A new exhibition at Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland provides a fascinating insight into artists’ creative spaces.
Going Public, a photographic exhibition by Richard Nolan-Neylan runs from Sunday 26 May to Sunday 30 June, and brings the private space of featured artists’ studios and workshops into the public realm.
Curated by Jacqueline Armitstead, this exhibition plays with concepts of the ‘gaze’ while also broadening our understanding of the artist, their creative spaces and processes. Traditional roles are reversed with the artist becoming the ‘subject’ for the gallery viewer’s contemplation.

Prominent Queensland artists featured include June Tupicoff, Judy Watson, Deborah Porch, Lisa Adams, Richard Bell, Mona Ryder, Ian Smith, Donna Marcus and Laurie Nilson amongst others.
Redland City Council spokesperson for Arts, Culture and Innovation Cr Paul Bishop said the exhibition provided unique insights into the creative process.
“Beautiful art in its own right, this exhibition casts lights on how the creative process is different for every artist,” Cr Bishop said.
“From the paint splattered floors of Richard Bell’s studios to the roof-high collection of pots and pans in Donna Marcus’s studio, we gain a rare glimpse into what inspires them and how they bring their art to life.”
“In an exciting addition to this exhibition, Going Public is complemented by Going Local, new works by Richard Nolan-Neylan profiling Queensland artists with a strong connection to the Redlands and Moreton Bay region.”
Going Local will also be displayed in the Cleveland Gallery with featured artists including Belinda Close, Carl Warner, Julie Shepherd, Jack Oudyn, Lucinda Elliott, Sharon Jewell, Luke Roberts, Lyndal Hargrave and Michael Zavros.
To celebrate Going Public and Going Local, Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland will hold an official opening 11am Sunday 26 May.
