An exciting range of community-led events and initiatives will receive a boost from more than $100,000 allocated through round two of Redland City Council’s sponsorship program for 2022-23.

Mayor Karen Williams said the program ultimately resulted in positive economic and community benefits far beyond Council’s original investment.

“The diversity of successful applications ranges through sporting, cultural, arts, social and entertainment across Redlands Coast,” Cr Williams said.

“Combined, these initiatives will add further excitement and colour to our vibrant city.

“The program offers additional funding to support Quandamooka cultural awareness and inclusion activities, and I am delighted that four of the 10 successful applications have qualified for this funding.

“Among those four is Redcity Roar Basketball Association for their Indigenous Round, which will also support island clinics to upskill local players.

“Wynnum Manly Seagulls Rugby League Football Club is hosting the Indigenous Recognition Hostplus Cup Match again this year and Council has partnered with the club, Deadly Choices and Yulu-Burri-Ba Aboriginal Corporation for Community Health to host not only the annual match, but also health clinics and initiatives to encourage positive health outcomes in the community.”

Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders-in-Council Aboriginal Corporation will be celebrating with a NAIDOC Community Day, and North Stradbroke Arts and Pottery Group will be showcasing island artists and makers through the Straddie Arts Trail.

Council sponsorship will also support the North Stradbroke Island/Minjerribah-based Straddie Invitational 2023, which will be hosted by the Point Lookout Boardriders in conjunction with Surfing Queensland.

Cr Williams said Council sponsorship wasn’t just for new initiatives.

“Sponsorship of Greazefest, now in its 23rd year, recognises the skill and experience of the organisers in putting together an action-packed event that draws large numbers of participants and community members,” she said.

“Events like this are valuable to Redlands Coast as they help to build social resilience and connectedness and give the local economy a boost.”

Other recipients of sponsorship in this round are Stradbroke Chamber Music Festival, Coochiemudlo Festival, Coochiemudlo Island Beach Markets and Bayside Vehicle Restorers’ annual Redlands Coast Australia Day Event.

The next round of sponsorship will open in July.
