Redland City Council has appointed a contractor to repair a damaged section of the Point Lookout Gorge Walk on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah).

The damaged section, roughly in the middle of the walk, was closed after significant rainfall damaged some of the foundations on the southern side of the centre bridge.

The successful contractor has started work on a design for extensive reconstruction of a 25 metre section of the boardwalk, including the installation of new foundations into the underlying rock.

Council expects to start site works in late October and finish late November 2021 in time for the school holidays.

During the construction period, the southern section of the boardwalk will be closed to the public from Monday to Friday but will reopen on weekends unless wet weather requires the contractor to work on a Saturday.

The northern section of the Gorge Walk will remain open to tourists and locals throughout the construction period.

The Gorge Walk offers multiple vantage points to experience the stunning scenery and abundant wildlife on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), but Council urges everyone to take heed of the site safety signage and not enter the closed area.

Residents and visitors are advised to stay on the designated trail and not attempt to bypass or cut through the closed section, as it sits over a steep section of the headland.

A fall could result in serious injury and sensitive vegetation is also present in the area.
