Redland City Council will hear more from the city’s young people following a decision this week to establish a youth reference group on Redlands Coast.

Deputy Mayor Lance Hewlett, who presided over this week’s general meeting, said Council had already delivered a range of activities for young people, and a youth reference group would further provide Redlands Coast’s younger residents the opportunity to provide Council feedback on issues that affected them.

“A youth reference group will also offer a platform for young people to voice their opinions to effect change,” he said.

“Our young residents are the future of our Redlands Coast community, and this is a great opportunity for them to have a say in how our community takes shape into the future.”

Cr Hewlett said the youth reference group model to be developed would enhance existing targeted activities, including forums and summits, to engage with the city’s youth.

“The reference group will include school leavers, young professionals and innovators, and will give feedback to Council on youth issues, with the group meeting on an as needs basis,” he said.

The reference group stems from a Notice of Motion put before Council last year by Division 6 Councillor Julie Talty, who said being involved in a youth reference group was a great chance for young residents to also build leadership skills.

“Having an open, direct and productive relationship with the young people of our city will ensure Council hears their voices now and into the future,” Cr Talty said.

“It will allow our young people to have more of a voice and give their thoughts on subjects that matter to them, such as youth facilities, public transport, youth events and more.”

Cr Hewlett said Council would advise the community when expressions of interest for the youth reference group were open.
