The Birkdale Waste Transfer Station will be closed on weekdays from 19 to 30 October as part of landfill rehabilitation works at the site, with the facility open as usual on the weekend of 24-25 October.
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said Council had decided to temporarily close the Birkdale tip to reduce traffic management risks to the public during the rehabilitation works and ensure that the project outcomes were delivered on time and within budget.
“As part of rehabilitation works at the transfer station, Council is constructing a bypass lane which will improve access to the site and reduce delays during busy periods for those disposing of green waste,” she said.

“Once completed, the new gatehouse bypass lane will accommodate an increasing volume of traffic during peak times, which is attributed to population growth in the region and increased site visitation.
“The Birkdale Waste Transfer Station will be closed from 19-23 and 26-30 October, weather permitting, with the site remaining open as usual on weekends during this period.
“Residents can use the Redland Bay Waste Transfer Station at 761-789 German Church Road during this period, which accepts all residential waste and commercial green waste.”
Council infrastructure spokesperson Cr Paul Gleeson said Council had made every effort to minimise the impact of the closure by keeping the facility open on weekends and scheduling the closure between the September and Christmas holiday periods.
“To minimise delays during the works, I encourage residents to visit the waste transfer station only when you need to and be sure to have your driver’s licence or proof of residency ready for the gatehouse,” he said.
“Separate different types of waste before you go so it’s easier for staff to inspect your load and for waste to be disposed in the correct location, which maximises opportunities to recycle.”
