Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp has been presented with a parting gift from the Redlands in front of record crowds at Raby Bay this afternoon, as he returned to shore on what is believed to be his final day of filming locally for the fifth instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams, who presented Depp with a collection of local wares, said the filming had brought far more than photo opportunities for fans, with the production bringing significant and immediate economic benefits to the local area.

“Many of the 250 cast and crew have been staying in Redlands accommodation since Monday, eating at our local restaurants, filling their tanks at our petrol stations and spending locally on a range of products and services,” she said.

“Filming has occurred in the region thanks to Council’s tireless work with the film’s location manager since late last year to get the crew here, bringing priceless international tourism coverage for the Redlands now and when the film is released.

“With an enviable location and a commitment to economic development, the Redlands continues to build its reputation as an ideal location for international movie shoots and Council is committed to fostering these relationships.

“Community spirit has been in full force this week, with star spotters, film buffs and locals rolling out the Redlands carpet, eager for a glimpse of Johnny Depp.

“The fifth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean is the third time international stardom has been on the shores of Redland City with this the biggest international film project since part of Angelina Jolie’s movie Unbroken was filmed here in 2013.”

Cr Williams thanked Johnny Depp for taking the time to speak with many of his loyal fans while filming in the Redlands, with some waiting all day to catch a glimpse of the star returning to dry land after a day of filming in Moreton Bay.

“Despite early starts and long days filming on the water, Depp has been incredibly gracious when returning to shore in the afternoons, greeting hundreds of fans while still in costume and soaking up the local hospitality,” she said.
