Council will take the precautionary action to install permanent signs warning people not to swim in a brackish lagoon on Cylinder Beach, North Stradbroke Island after water monitoring detected Enterococci above Healthy Waterways Healthy Waterplay guidelines ‘action trigger’ levels.
Enterococci are naturally-occurring bacteria that can be harmful to humans at elevated levels.
The lagoon is situated at the top of Cylinder Beach and is fed by fresh and saltwater. Elevated bacteria levels are more likely to occur when it is not being flushed by sea water
Swimming, drinking or playing in this lagoon is not recommended.
The ocean water and tidally-flushed salt water lagoons at Cylinder Beach are safe for swimming.
Council has conducted regular monitoring on the open sea-water at Cylinder Beach with results showing the samples are well within safe levels under the Healthy Waterways Healthy Waterplay guidelines.
