The generosity of Redland Art Gallery supporters is revealed in its latest exhibition Unwrapped: Showcasing new acquisitions by gift and donation.

Redland City Council’s cultural spokesperson Cr Lance Hewlett said Unwrapped, on display at Redland Art Gallery, Capalaba from Saturday 21 March – Saturday 2 May 2015 highlighted the quality collection Redland Art Gallery had acquired through the generosity of others.

“Donating artworks to the Redland Art Gallery is a gift to the whole community, ensuring that these works will be seen by future generations and will continue to enhance the cultural fabric of the Redlands,” Cr Hewlett said.

“As with any gift, it’s best appreciated when you share it with others so Unwrapped is a wonderful opportunity to dedicate an entire exhibition to revealing some of the artworks our City has been given recently.

“This exhibition focuses on, and encourages, the importance of developing collections through the practice of giving and our remarkable local collection is a perfect example of this.”

Featured in the exhibition are a number of works donated as part of the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program.

Since 1978, the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program has facilitated the contribution of more than $680 million in donations to public collections across Australia.

Cr Hewlett said the scheme fostered philanthropic practice that benefited regional, state and national collections.

“The Cultural Gifts Program has allowed Redland Art Gallery to enrich its collection in ways that would otherwise not be possible,” he said.

To celebrate the opening of Unwrapped: Showcasing new acquisitions by gift and donation, Redland Art Gallery Capalaba will host an artwork appraisal day from 10am – 3pm, Thursday 9 April 2015.

At the artwork appraisal day people can bring in an artwork for a free 15-minute consultation with Ross Searle, specialist fine art consultant and valuer.

Redland Art Gallery, Capalaba, is located at Capalaba Place, Noeleen Street, Capalaba.
