Redland City Council is encouraging residents to get outside and grow to help plant 2000 native plants as part of the annual National Tree Day on Sunday 27 July.
Council’s environment spokesperson Cr Paul Gleeson said the event would not only strengthen the Redlands’ environment, but it would also provide a fun activity for residents to participate in.
“As Australia’s biggest community tree-planting event attracting over 200,000 people around the country every year, Planet Ark’s National Tree Day aims to encourage schools, community groups and individuals to actively care for our unique environment,” he said.

Cr Gleeson said National Tree Day was part of Council’s broader Community Bushcare program, which is now in its fourteenth year of hosting the event in the Redlands.
“This year’s event will enhance habitat along Eprapah Creek by widening the creek corridor and removing weeds,” he said.
“Eprapah Creek is a local favourite for kayaking and fishing and is home to adundant birdlife such as the Azure Kingfisher and Eastern Yellow Robin. It is also home to our iconic Koala.
“These events help support the Redlands’ environmental character and provide green space for the future of the community,” he said.
“All of us can help make a difference within our community by understanding the benefits of tree planting to address important environmental issues such as the loss of habitat for native wildlife.”
Participants are asked to wear closed-in shoes, sun-protective clothing and bring their own drinking water. Council will provide all other requirements including plants, equipment, gardening gloves, sunscreen and insect repellent.
After the planting, a free sausage sizzle will be on offer for all who participate, as well as certificates for children who help plant on the day.
Wildlife and environment displays and a lucky door prize draw will also add to the festivities of the morning.
